25th October 8.00pm talk on the THE EVICTION FROM EDEN by SELIM RAUER
The state of grace and disgrace which followed on
from the human eviction from Eden is a recurring theme in French and Irish historical and cultural legacy. This specific experience
of a lost paradise can be interpreted in many ways: Marcel Proust, James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Jean Genet or more recently
Emmanuel Carrère, Hugo Hamilton, Hervé Guibert, Joseph O’Connor and especially Bernard-Marie Koltès have given their own interpretation
of this phenomenon.
Selim Rauer, writer and poet, will introduce this thematic which will be followed by the presentation of an exceptional screening of Bernard-Marie Koltès' In the loneliness of the cotton fields (Dans la solitude des champs de coton) staged by Patrice Chéreau and directed by Stéphane Metge in 1995. Selim Rauer's visit has been funded through the Mission Stendhal programme.
Salim’s book is
a fictionalised account of the life of Mohammed told by four key characters, his first wife Khadija, his closest friend Caliph Abu
Bakr, the warrior General Khalid and his last love Aisha. It is a fascinating and well-researched account of a seminal figure in history
and one whose teachings and writings continue to influence the world today.
