Recognition of Volunteering efforts of Alliance Francaise

A  recognition of our volunteers. The Alliance Francaise Kilkenny has come in second place in the Kilkenny Community and Voluntary Awards 2021 in the Arts, Heritage and Education section. The winner was Butler Gallery. But very well done to all the committee who work so hard to keep the organisation going. While we all do it for the love of it, it is great to be recognised! The Awards Ceremony alas, had to be cancelled. We are always looking for volunteers for our committee so if you are interested and available please let any of the committee know.

Alliance Francaise Kilkenny represent Ireland in World Quiz

The Défi International is a worldwide quiz on French culture for members of the Alliance Francaise throughout the world. Alliance Francaise Kilkenny had our own version of the quiz among our students and the winners were Kayleigh Crews and Fred Tuite (both students in the Literature/Book Club class). They went on to the National Final in Dublin where they beat all the other Alliances in Ireland for the honour of representing the Irish region. The World Final was held recently (online by Zoom hosted by TV5 Monde) and they did very well against the other 32 contestants from around the world. But, no prizes unfortunately. Those were won by competitors from Madagascar, Madrid and Tenerife. But well done to Kayleigh and Fred for flying the Kilkenny and Irish flags in this worldwide quiz.

Celebrate 14 July with the Alliance in Kilkenny

The French get it right! While we celebrate our national feast day in wet and windy March, they do theirs in full summer on 14 July But not to be outdone we’ve decided to join them in celebrating it this year! So at 2.30 pm on Wednesday 14 July at Butler Gallery, the Alliance Francaise in Kilkenny will be hosting a gathering outside Butler Gallery at Evans Lane.
We will have a complimentary glass of wine (or get yourself a coffee at Muse Café) and some musical entertainment from The Sycamore Tree, playing French medieval music on the recorder.
So give yourself a later lunch break, or pause your shopping to come and join us for a glass of wine, music and chat.
Other aspects of Bastille Day (Military Parades, Jets flying past, Concerts from international stars, fireworks and dancing in the square) well, you’ll have to provide those yourself, we’ll just supply the fun, music and chat with a glass of wine!
Bonne Fete!
In Kilkenny you can nearly be there!

New Term September 2020 Important Information

Well these are difficult time for all of us. We are all trying to return to normality and/or find new ways of doing things. Here at the Alliance Française Kilkenny we want to continue our mission of bringing the French language and culture to you, but we are challenged by the physical restraints of running classes in the current COVID-19 situation. So for this term anyway we are taking our classes online and will be running them through the Zoom software.

So we will be offering all our usual classes from Beginners to Advanced linking from our teachers’ homes to yours via a video link. In some cases the classes have been allocated a different time slot to fit in with the teacher’s availability. It will mean that you will have to set aside a regular timeslot to join your class from your home via your computer, tablet or phone. You don’t need any hardware (unless your device does not have a camera) and you don’t need any software (you just join us and we send you the link) but it does work better if you have a good internet connection.

Try for free:

If you are concerned with either the technical or educational issues relating to online teaching you can try it out before you enrol on:

  • Wednesday 2nd September from 7-8 with Isabelle de Toulgoet  (Classes 3, 4, 6 and 7))
  • Thursday 3rd September from 7-8pm with Solenn Ryan. (Classes 1, 2, 5, and 8)

If you would like to avail of this testing and tasting then please contact us for a link and access code to these Zoom meetings.

In any case enrolment will be on Monday 7th September from 7-9 in the Club House Hotel (in person and socially distanced) or you can email and let us know which class you are joining (class number) and pay by Credit Transfer to our Bank Account (Alliance Française Kilkenny: BIC is IPBSIE2D and IBAN  IE91IPBS99063680018550  ( note the letter after IE91 is I).  Please include your name and class number to the transfer details.

  • Classes for 14 weeks (no mid term break) €150
  • Discount for attending two classes or two from same family: 10%
  • If you were enrolled last term and lost out due to classes being suspended, your fee for this term is reduced to €100

Online French Culture

As our classes are currently suspended and our venue of the Club House Hotel closed we can only communicate online. Fortunately there are very many cultural options available for those interested in France.
